Benerito is credited with saving the cotton business in post-WWII America via her discovery of a process to provide wrinkle-free, stain-free, and flame-resistant cotton materials. In addition to this work, Benerito also developed a way to reap fats from seeds for use in intravenous feeding of medical patients. After retiring from the USDA and instructing university courses for a further eleven years, Benerito received the Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award both for her contributions to the textile trade and her dedication to schooling.
